How Abe Lincoln Changed My Life

How Abe Lincoln Changed My Life

I have President Abraham Lincoln to thank for the emotional experience I had the other day…

Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend our local church service. My wife and kids were out of town visiting my in-laws, and I had gone alone, and was sitting in an empty row about eight or so rows from the front, waiting for service to start.

A gentleman about fifteen years older than me and wearing a hat, walked into the room and, seeing that I was alone, came over to introduce himself and wish me a good morning. We ended up having a wonderful conversation, and realized we were quite similar, both with large families and attending service to give thanks to the blessings we’ve received in our lives.

We then parted company and the man went to take a seat in the front row where he removed his cap.

It was then that I realized that same man was one I had seen at past services.

I had judged him.

He was very vocal during the service, unlike me - who tends to be quiet, and reserved. He moved around a lot during the live music, unlike me - who tends to be still. I remember thinking him to be eccentric and someone I wanted to steer clear of.

I was wrong.

Even though I’ve worked at removing it, there’s still this natural tendency to judge and avoid people who may act or appear different than me. Some of that is biological, some of it is upbringing, but as a grown adult I carry the responsibility of overcoming that bias.

I can’t help but think how much good I’ve missed out on by not getting to know people, for one reason or another.

My favorite quote from Abraham Lincoln is “I do not like that man. I must get to know him better.”

What a gift of wisdom handed down to us - and such an appropriate one for today, where there seems to be so much divisiveness and separation between people.

I’ll be working on more introductions and less judgements going forward. If this experience was any indication, it’s much more rewarding.

Thanks Abe. Happy Presidents Day.
