The Good From the Bad

The Good From the Bad

[The Good From the Bad] Something wonderful happened yesterday that I'm not sure would ever have happened without this terrible virus impacting all our lives...

Yesterday, our littlest turned 3 years old and our family celebrated the day.

And even though our daughter, her name is Summer, has been trying to convince us all that it's been her birthday every day for the last 45 days, yesterday she was right.

But that's not the wonderful part that wouldn't have happened without the virus.

The thing that happened was, about 40 children plus accompanying adults, mostly from our neighborhood, showed up in front of our house to sing Happy Birthday to Summer.

No party, no presents (though a few brought some), just a moment of togetherness.

Yes, physical distancing was practiced.

And yes, we all felt that strange feeling of not being able to physically connect with each other the way we normally would with our friends and neighbors.

But for 5 to 10 minutes, a small crowd gathered safely in a neighborhood to celebrate a special occasion in a simple way.

The same thing happened over the weekend to celebrate another neighbor's son who graduated college.

I'm grateful for this reconnection.

For these simple, neighborly acts.

I had forgotten them.
