(Book Report) The Organized Mind by Daniel Levitin

(Book Report) The Organized Mind by Daniel Levitin

Just finished Daniel Levitin's 'The Organized Mind' and one principle in the book is saving my life...

My wife and I have four kids under the age of 11, and I play a significant role in multiple companies.

It's a lot to be responsible for and taking on that much was starting to have an effect.

There were times when I stopped being able to remember simple things:

  • What I had for dinner last night

  • That the kids had dance recital that evening

  • That friends were coming over

  • People's names that I knew

I'd just get foggy-minded. And it got concerning.

Especially to my wife.

But a concept in the book 'The Organized Mind' recently helped lift the mental fog I've been walking around in.

The concept is referred to as: 'The External Brain'

Never before have we as humans faced such an onslaught of information in our daily lives.

Visual. Auditory. Sensory.

Many of us are taking on things and absorbing information at a rate our brains weren't designed to handle well.

A general offloading of that information helps our brains keep from overloading.

So now, I journal daily.

And transferring things you need to remember to an external place helps reduce mental exertion.

So now, I geek out with my new label maker.

And I don't walk around in a fog anymore.
